Because both the stfength and the weakness of Pinay
lies in the fact, that he is surrounded by enemies. His support
comes exclusively from the people. There is like an upsirge of
confidence, The recent Senatorial elections have proven this, And
it was even more impressively shown in the recent parliamentary
by elections, in which Gaullists lost up to 60% of their votes,
in which Socialists and MRP saw their votes drop and in which
Pinay's Independents were swept into office. The appeal of Pinay
is so great, that numerous Gaullists - including Members of Par¬
liament - and Sobtialists - including a Senator - have left their
party to serve Pinay's policy. Both parties are disintegrating
under the impact of the Premier, and hence are devoting all their
vast powers to bring his downfall - but under conditions which
should not openly show their hand's work, since they would be af¬
raid of the people to show openly their design. In this they are
supported by the mofiolithic trade unions and the large financial
interests, who both were profiting from the inflation and are
thus unhappy to see an end to easy and scandalous profits. This
unholy coalition of capitalists, professional labour leaders,
politicians is laying in ambush against the Premier, While paying
lip=service to him, they are looking for the opening to defeat
him. And this powerful chalition seems in a good position to
beat the Premier, despite his skill and his kmowledge. Especially
in the autumn greatest efforts will be made to overthrow him. And
the chances stand 50-50.

But while this goes on, Pinay is proving anew that France
under a good and honest administration is far from dying or cha¬
otic. The healthy strength of the country is still there. And if
adequately called, the country can show the world the most amazing
recoveries. It can still surprise the pessimists and surpass the
optmistse On the other hand, if Pinay should fall, the chaos frim
which the country has just escaped would return with a vengeance,
and would lead inevitably to grave political repercussions. Truly
it can be said, that, as it looks today, France is playing her
last chance of this period. And for this desperate game the country
has certainly chosen a fine leader to direct its fortunes,
