rendered safe by a sudden split between the Democrats and the Libe
ral Party, a local group in New York City, which still is able to
gather roughiiy 500.000 votes and has cast these always for the
Democrats. What happened was that the liberals wanted Mre Harri¬
men as candidate for Senator, The Democrats on the other hand wan¬
ted the Boroygh President of Brooklyn, Mr. Cashmoree Seeing that
Cashmore had the full support of the organization, Harriman with¬
drew, and Cashmore was nominated, The liberals refused to accept
this choice, and are putting up a man of their own, one Dr. Counts,
who has not the slight st chance, but will cost Cashmore decisive
votes. Cashmore being furthermore a man practically unknown out¬
side of his own limited urban area, would have had an uphill fight
anyhow, despite his fine past records But with the split, his out¬
look is d m indeed,

Another grave local issue, with regards to Stevenson, is
the situation developing in Nevada, There since times immemorial,
the Democratic machinery is in the hands of conservative Democrat
Pat MacCarran, U.S,Senator. This time, a young extreme radical,
caught the machine napping, and gained by a few hundred votes the
Senatorial nomination from the official candidate, Lt. Governor
Bible. This young radical, one Mechling, a Denver=borne newspaper
man, will now stand against Republican incumbent Malone, There is
a feeling in Nevada, that in order to get rid of Mechling, the
McCarren machine migh favour Malone - a matter which can be more
easily expected, sinee it was proven in the present Wisconsin pri¬
flaries, that numerous Democrats went over into the Republican ranks
in order to get a chance to vote for McCarthy. Something similar can
happen in Nevada and might push rhat traditionally Democratic
state into the Republican column.

Similarly, the situation in Ohio seems to go Republican.
Incumbent Senator Bricker seems to be having a wide edge over Demo¬
erat Mike Di Salle, and though Bricker is a strong Taft man, his
victory might still carry Eisenhower as welle

In Connecticut too the local situation is developing in
a most interesting sensee The Senatorial by-election to replace the
late Brian McMahon is developing into an interesting fight. The
Eisenhower group, through Hoffman, injected itself into the homt¬
nation by boosting Mrs? Clare Booth luce, former Congresswoman.
This was enough to swing the whole Republican machine against her
and to nominate Banker bush for the Senatee This rebuff ought to
make Eisenhower think, On the other hand observers agree, that
Bush! vactory over the erratic lady from Sugar Hill will greatly
increase the Republican chances, and might in the end be the rea~
son, why Connecticut, contrary to most expectations, might go for
Eisenhower,
