2 ~ Chinese Impressions about Stalin :
On all four meetings with Stalin, the Chinese Delegation
was deeply impressed by the vastness of his knowledge and the bril¬
liance of his understanding. On the other hand they were not little
a@lamed about the changing state of his healthe While on the first
meeting he looked very well indeed, rested and full of vigour, he
was visibly tired the second time and looked gravely ill and hag¬
gard at the third meeting. He was vastly improved on the fourthe
Stalin told Chou-En=<lai that he was suffering now from re=
current very painful headgeches, which coüld not be remedied. He is
also suffering from pains in the eyes, from time to timee

it is absolutely true, that the Chinese requested the
Russian forces to stay on in Port-Arthure “he Russians were eager
to withdraw and had only to agree on the express demand of the
Ghinese to stay one
When this matter came under discussion, on the first
meeting with Stalin, after the Russians had agreed to the Chinese
request, Stalin abruptly suggested, whether as a compelsation
for the Russian stay in Port-Arthur the Chinese would not agree
to send a small garrison to the West - he mentioned either #al¬
tiski or Stralsund in Eastern Germanye Nobody was prepared for
this suggestion, and Chou-In-lai replied, that he would have to
consult Mao. On this the matter was droppede On the last day, when
nothing more hd been done about it, Stalin retumed to the question
again, telling Chou that they should consider this seriously in
Peivbnge Chou pmised to take the matter up with Mao as soon as
he would be back, and to advise Moscowe But he pointed already out
that B would see no basic difficulty.
In Russian circles there is the feeling, that this should
be limited to Stralsund, since Baltiski is Soviet territory and
it would be detrimental to the prestige, if foreign troops were
stationed on Soviet soilé :
